A memorial service has been scheduled for Bernie Walko and his wife at the end of the month. Both passed away within the past year. Their daughter, Anne, was a member of the graduating class of 1969. Mr Walko was as much a part of our high school lives as any student or teacher. The date of the service is Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel at Saint Anthony’s Cemetery on Hoyt Street in Larksville. If any local alumni can attend, it would be much appreciated by the Walko family. Thank you.
The Class of 1966 will hold a planning meeting for their fiftieth reunion on Monday, November 30 at 12:00 noon at Grotto Pizza in Edwardsville.
I recently received an email from Zac Davis of ClassReport.org. If anyone is interested in setting up an individual class website, this might be a good option. Also, if you would like anything (reunion notices, class news, human interest stories, etc.) posted on bishoporeilly.org or our Facebook page, email me.
Those of you who aren’t fans of Bishop O’Reilly High School on Facebook might have missed a fascinating post. Last fall, a recording of the 1988 commencement exercises were posted on Youtube. If you haven’t seen it, do check it out. It will be a great trip down memory lane for many graduates, I’m sure.
Can you believe it’s 34 years since we walked the hallowed halls of Bishop O’Reilly High School!

The Central Catholic/Bishop O’Reilly Community mourns the sudden loss of Rev. Daniel Hitchko, principal from 1968-1974. The diocese has released the following statement:
The Diocese is saddened by the death of Father Daniel Hitchko. Although Father, who was 73, had been battling several serious health problems for a number of years, his sudden death while attending an event at Wyoming Area Catholic School was unexpected.
The paramedics who responded attempted to use the school’s automated external defibrillator (AED), but apparently the device was not functioning. It is unclear why it did not function or whether it would have changed the outcome.
Father Hitchko served the Church faithfully for 46 years. The Diocese mourns his loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Father Hitchko and his family.
Please pray for the soul of Father Hitchko. You can read more about his years at Central at Kevin Jordan’s blog, This Just In.
There’s a new website in the works for alumni of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Scranton: www.nepacatholicschools.com. This new resource will connect alumni from various schools, post information on reunions and alumni gatherings, and celebrate Catholic education.
